Madeira

 

Location:
600 miles Southwest of Lisbon
360 miles from West coast of Africa
 
Population:  270,000
 
Area:  460 square miles (Three quarters of Hong Kong)
 
Capital:  Funchal
 
Climate:  Sub-tropical climate (cool winter, mild summer)
 
History:  Became part of Portugal in 1419 while captains João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira got blown off course on their journey around Africa and found a small island.
